Home Accent Ideas

How to choose curtains and blinds for your home.

Curtains and blinds give presence to a room, helping to set the mood from casual and easy to bold and dramatic. Before choosing curtains or blinds for your homes, have it in mind that each room has its own needs and requirements. So take the time to understand what would work best for each space.

Curtains versus blinds

The first question is deciding between curtain or blinds or both. Curtains are windows coverings that are made of lightweight fabrics. Drapes are typically made from heavier fabrics and go all the way to the floor. Blinds on the other hand composed slats that can be manipulated to let in more or less light. Blinds are more effective at blocking out light unless you choose black out draperies options.

Blinds are usually cheaper and easier to clean than curtains and drapes, however they are more limited in design styles. Curtains and drapes add instant style and texture to rooms AND the flowy fabric make the space feel cozy. Blinds make rooms feel more open and less crowded with their less intrusive designs.

When deciding between curtain or blinds, first think about the look you prefer. Then consider the functionality of the space and whether or not you need more or less light. Does your windows faces the road? Or is it in clear sight of your neighbors?

Pairing blinds with curtains

If you can't decide whether to go for curtains or blinds, you can as well choose both. Rooms that are flooded with a lot of light during the day or night are excellent candidates for a combination of curtains and blinds.

Drawing the curtains while partially allowing blinds to peek through or opening up the blinds while curtains are draped across, quickly shift your focus and change your mood.

Picking Colours

There are many colours and styles options out there for curtains. It all depends on your style and how you want your room to feel.

Colours can have a significant impact on the ambience in a room of any home.

Before anything else, take a look at the room where curtains will be installed. What Colours are the walls and the floors? Is the furniture bright and vivid? If flashy pieces of furniture and decor adorn your room, curtains of softer and more neutral, earthly or pastel tones would be the perfect option.

The type of room or space also determines what colour of curtains work best.

  • Red: Red stimulates appetite, sexual needs, energy and make people active. Red curtains can be perfect for kitchen, dining room or bedroom.

  • Orange: this colour makes it easier to accept changes, creates a sense of comfort and provides energy. Suitable for kitchens and living rooms.

  • Yellow: Yellow gives a sense of friendship. If you want to make guests feel more relaxed and feel free to communicate, decorate your living room with yellow.

  • Green: Green curtains are perfect for the bedroom because this colour relaxes, predisposes good night's sleep and make room more spacious.

  • Turquoise: Turquoise helps to achieve inner harmony and it contributes to calm people down. So this colour curtain fits the room where you want to relax after a hard day of work.

  • Blue: Is a peaceful colour that helps to fight insomnia and anxiety. It also helps in concentration. Blue curtains are perfect in the home office and bedroom.

  • Purple: purple colour has calming effect. It make rooms more alive. It will keep you more awake and energized.

  • Pink and purple promote tenderness and love feelings. They have good effects on intimate relationship. So pink colour is just perfect for your bedroom.

  • Light brown curtains help create cosy homes. Brown colour helps to concentrate as well but it requires bright Interiors accents so that the room won't look boring and dull.
