French Design Style

French are effortlessly elegant.  Whether they are dressing up or decorating their homes. The French have an innate ability to create an intoxicating mix of finesse and flamboyance with ease.
If you want to turn your home into an impossibly chic, french-inspired space, there are rules you should follow:

  • Do use simple, natural fabrics like linen, cotton and cheese clothe.
  • Don't go overboard with frills, ruffles, tassels, fringes and floral fabrics.
  • Do leave a wall completely bare if you can.
  • Be bold and unconventional.
  • Don't shy away from Introducing one spectacular element like an extravagantly colored object of art. A large scale work of art on a wall or an oversized piece of furniture to up the wow factor.
  • Do look upwards. Remember the ceiling and plan to make it more interesting.
  • Don't hold yourself back when decorating the bedroom.
  • Do add something shiny to the decor.
GETTING THE FRENCH DESIGN LOOK
  • Color. There is a lot of room for flexibility when it comes to color. Let your personality dictate the palette you choose. But a soft neutral color keeps the room uncomplicated, a quality that's truly french. Gentle whites are go-to colors for Parisian apartments.
  • Hang inspiring arts. There are nothing more french than having your very own wall of art, especially when combined with antique furniture and elegant draperies. The beauty of french interiors lies in their unique charm. Every room tells a story about the person living in it.
  • Welcome natural light with wide windows. There's nothing like the soft rays of the sun to give your space a picture perfect look, especially when they deliberately torch on your home's architectural details.
  • Nonchalant styling. French likes to keep things simple. Styling in Paris is careful and never overdone. Letting it's environment speak for itself. A simple glass vase, a well proportioned mirrors or a simple linen cushion is all a French apartment needs to enhance it's timelessness.
  •  Understated furniture. French Design prioritizes design integrity. Simple lines are preferred over unnecessary or distracting decoration and serene arrangements are tied together by a sense of relaxed elegance. A chaise lounge, an expertly piped stool, a fine marble coffee table are just few examples of French love for the subdued.

  • Nothing feels more french than a decorative gold mirror. Whether its full length or hung over a mantel. Not only a mirror an  easy item to incorporate into your existing decor, it also make your space look even more open.
  • An easy way to infuse a little Parisian personality into your home? Find a vintage inspired french posters online and frame them, hang them and prop large pieces against the wall.
  • Again, in a french-inspired home, a chandelier is a must-have, especially one in gold- you know, to coordinate with that gilded mirror.
  • A vintage rug will also complement your decor and make it easier to mix old and new.
